Seriously, longer flight time, depending on the model, up to 8 minutes, a beautiful smell, trails of smoke. Take one flight pack and a jug of fuel and your away, no charging
The downside, You have to clean them heaps, @BeLoWseaLeVeL gave me a great tip, spray the bird with spray and wipe(tm) (or some other cleaner), then blow it of with compressed air, I haven't tried it yet, (no easy access to compressed air)
Not as much power, but it teaches you to be better on collective management. You have to go through a learning curve of tuning a motor.
I love nitro, I love the smell of burnt nitro, and did I say I like nitro

They feel 'organic' (maybe because I'm burning dead dinosaurs) as opposed to a 'sterile' electric feel (it won't make much sense unless you fly nitro). Nitro are my preferred helis. But hey, they are both totally cool. If you have the spare bucks, spool one up mate - how can it hurt?

Unless you are a full on 3d man if you go to the larger 700 size you can go gasser and get around 1/2 hour flight times on ordinary 2 stroke mower mix.
As gassers don't smoke your model will stay clean. A gasser will do grace-full (big) aerobatics and mild 3D.
Getting back to your question. You will need a fuel pump and container, If its an OS motor a starter will be required unless its a pull start. By the time you run it in you will learn the tuning procedure as it will run rich on the initial factory settings. Maintenance wise as nitro and gassers have more vibrations due to the power stroke and imbalance of the motor you will have to maintain your chopper as things tend to come loose more often.

 

I have heard gassers run really hot, plus I don't think I could focus for 1/2 hour, I have the attention span of a gold fish

-- great looks (smoken hot)
-- more maintenance (cleaning)
-- longer flight times
-- more maintenance (vibes)
-- less powerful, more collective control required
-- more maintenance (crash repairs)
-- more parts, starting, tuning, fuel
-- more maintenance (bigger toolbox, bigger car)
-- more $$

I think I'll come and fly one of yours @simon and wait until I'm really ready to be bothered... Unless of course I get hooked on the smell of nitro in the morning... Lol

The elecs do seem to require less effort at the sacrifice of a few mins flight time... Not sure I gave the concentration span for a 30 min gasser @Fredo

 

Nitros also teach collective management.


And they make SMOKE!!!!!! 3D aerobatics are way better with smoke

One of the best days I had flying was with a nitro, first thing in the morning, dead still, flew a tank, landed, refueled, turned around to to the flight line for flight number 2 and it was still foggy with nitro clouds, it was one of the coolest thing I have ever seen!

I like the fact they emit smoke and its not caused by a problem

 

I think that is definitely true @feral, with the extra bonus that the smoke can hide dodgy flying skills so the onlookers will never know

 

smoke is just cool... it gives the heli a sense of movement in the sky, stand behind someone flying one, you will firm up, I'm sure (on your decision to get one)
