Question? How Do You Know If A Servo Is Going Bad?

    As of late I've had some issues with my T-rex 500. It flew great for years, but now the swash doesn't seem to be level when I'm at different collective positions. What used to be an extremely stable bird now drifts off. I bought it used with the servos on it, so I have no idea of how many flights are on them. Is there any way to know for sure if the servos are going bad?

      I had one smaller servo that seemed to respond ok then suddenly kick in one direction. The servo had several thousand flights on it though. In my case the heli felt as if it was un-acurate. I was adjusting for the error without realizing. The way i tested for this was just to activate the servo through its range very slowly......

      Now other indications your servo is going bad .....
      • It smells of alcohol late in the evening
      • It doesnt come home untill late
      • It keeps itself locked in the heli-room not wanting to socialise
      • It doesnt do as its told
      (sorry i had to put those last bullet points in!)

      Check servos for excessive heating afer flight. If they are hot expect worst scenario.

      Testing servos under load can provide some clues but can also destroy weaker small servo.

      It could be that the potentiometer (variable resistor) is dirty and is causing the servo to run erratically. If you can, open the servo, disengage potentiometer from output shaft (if connected by a splined shaft take note or mark position on shaft before removing), spray some electronics cleaner in the potentiometer and turn it back and forth full sweep a few times and then put it back exactly where it was. This may correct the problem and save replacing a servo. ..... Just a suggestion, but then again, replacing servos may be safer in the long term outlook.

      @utrinque .. That video pretty much explains what I was trying to say about the potentiometer in a servo. When they get dirty, they react the Same way as a dirty volume control on a stereo or guitar amp where they sound scratchy and/or work intermittently when you adjust them, in a servo- a dirty potentiometer gives an incorrect feedback signal as to the location of output shaft thereby causing servo to regulate position erratically.

      Well it doesn't get any better than that, i would do the optimiser drill and a trim flight and see how that goes.

      Mark I would check twice:
      - is gyros sensor mounted firmly? It could get loose
      - is Vbar receiving zero at mid stick for aile and elev? You could set some trim accidentally in the mid time which causes drift

      Do not bother with swash being not level. It is Vbar job to make it level in flight when you do not touch aile or elev.

      More important than level swash are appropriate limits of movements for each servo and correct cyclic ring setting I suppose.

      firstly I would check that the servo horns are not slipping sounds typical as you describe. Always check the simple things first.
