Question? Motor Smelt Burnt

    E5 came down with a burning smell on the weekend. I removed the canopy a caught a waft of burnt smell.

    Motor was no hotter than usual but taking a good sniff both @hardys and myself could detect that burn smell.

    Four more flights and the smell had faded and was never as strong as when I first smelt it.

    Should I be worried?

      I would suspect ESC or possibly weak connection somewhere in battery or motor wiring.

      Definitely check ALL wires and make sure none are shorting onto the carbon frame. Brent lost his heli only a couple of weeks ago to this problem. The slightest contact with a wire can cause your heli to be unresponsive in flight. If ALL wires are ok (and i mean really inspect every wire) then next time you fly give it a little bit of stick. Is the motor hot when you come down? If you have a temp meter measure how hot. Scorpions run hot by nature but even if they get hot they dont usually smell.

      If the motor is suspect . I'd be pulling it apart to check nothings delaminated . Ive had my scorpion's so hot you couldn't handle them but no smell

      Yes... the smell of burning carbon is wonderful @Stuart. Dont worry about checking for the problem. It will go away by itself - i promise!!!

      Stuart what ESC are you running and what head speed do you have it set at or throttle curve/percentage? I know that you've been practicing your skills for nice slow and controlled flight and wonder if you have the head speed too low for the ESC. If it does not have active free wheeling capability then it could be trying to dissipate too much energy internally and giving you that burning sensation in your crotch.

      Specs are below.. HS is probably around 2150 to 2200. Would need to plug in and look.

      It's definitely the motor that smells, not the ESC.

      Did you put oil in this motor @Stuart? And what temperature does it register after a flight?

      Doesn't oil tend to degrade the enamel coating on the windings?

      That was my thoughts as well. My scorpion motor manual says to oil the bearings every 6 flights or so.

      Yes I did oil it at some past time. Have not oiled it since the last bearing change. I don't know the temp. Will need to measure that somehow.

      Well if it's definitely the motor producing the smell then it's likely not a freewheeling issue in the ESC.

      Onto the next theory then... I'm wondering if a bearing has partially seized causing excessive heat and the grease/oil to burn . Does the motor turn over freely by hand?
