Went down to the club this arvo. Saw matty down there setting up the new sim computer and played around on the sim. It was alot of fun. Matty went home and i though - why not have a few flights? Sure its windy but so what...

Well boy did the wind pick up. It was at least 30 knots and in my face as well. I was trying to do some 3d but seriously i have never really worried about the wind so much - until today. It was not very comfortable as the extra allowance for the wind was heaps more than what i was used to. It was pretty scary but a rush nonetheless. Came back in one piece thats all that matters. Everyone else was smart for not flying....

Here at our field, the wind is always blowing strong. 10-17mph seems to be our normal wind, and we have gotten used to it. Back in 2012, I was at an event on the same weekend there was a hurricane passing by just off the west coast. The wind was a sustained 25mph, with gusts of 30-32. We had an absolute blast flying in it, and surprisingly enough....there was only one crash during the entire weekend. Which happened due to a broken battery strap, which allowed the battery to shift and unplug itself.

50km winds? Never seen anyone fly in that... Ever 40km once and the heli was a on 40 degree angle just to hover it.

Here is the wind gauge at the 2012 event. Clearly pegged at 30+ mph. :)

WOW... thats awesome... 30mph... you can have fun in it.... and i have in the past. The only thing i was not comfortable about was the wind blowing full strength in my face... Kept pushing the heli really close. Are you sure you are not thinking of 40 knots @MickyD ? 40 knots is about 80klm and 30 knots is about 60klm (roughly double).. In 40knot winds your heli would definitely be leaning!

Wind is something I'm going to have to learn to deal with up here. If I don't, I loose 75% of my outdoor fly time. It's the unexpected gusts that get me.

If you make sure the wind is coming from your back or even the side @Beaver, its much more manageable and as @Geena said can even be fun. I only experience discomfort when its blowing in my face.

I have noticed a difference in flying the 450 with a light to moderate wind.... it's more stable. The same wind would have my micros drifting around and struggling to make headway. Those unexpected gusts of wind out of nowhere catch me off guard.

I don`t like even 10-12 mph wind when it`s in my face. Anything goes wrong and it`s likely to get blown toward you.

Yep i feel exactly the same way...... It tends to make the flying - uncomfortable? And as for the gusts @Beaver... flying in gusty winds is very hard to learn in.. If its a consistent breeze its predictable... but if its gusty, not so good.
