Pro's and cons after having the Horus a little while and "WoW' factor is gone.
Had back off and seen the metal pieces were others have plastic.

Once again. I'm just a Common Joe giving my thoughts on the TX. I have NO connection to FrSky or any of their vendors.

Given a fare chance. I feel the Horus with FrSky rx, will become a major player in the TX and RX world.
The Horus is light years ahead of the Taranis of any version.

 

Great review @Richard Knapp , the gimbals are a major selling point as far as i am concerned. Heli pilots - especially smack pilots need precision and speed - a 6 bearing CNC gimbal is a very good combination.

I like the fact you can add your own photographs for the model and the fact that the gimbals use hall sensors. I wonder what the stated resolution is.

The lower cost with high quality equates to great value - but i suppose its what they have to do in order to establish a firm brand position.

 

The res.
I am not a comp or electronic guro but have heard the res isn't as high as a super high end model. But so close the difference can only be noticed with computer and any person saying they can tell is only placebo.

Bearing and CNC.
Yes the other high end brands, I have read are only 4 bearing.

 

Hi all, thought I'd chime in here with my own experience, I recently bought a HORUS X12S, and I am sold on it so far, I have had an X9D for a while, and struggled with getting my head around open tx, while the X9D is a nice radio, especially price wise, learning curve for opentx was hard, the radio support so many features, its overwhelming, its also a new language for conventional radio users, when the HORUS X12S came along with a more user friendly system, it was hard not to jump in, it was a very attractive radio with most bits in far better locations, the screen and its location was a good seller, as was the FrOS, a modified version of open tx made more user friendly, getting around took little time, browsing the manual helped, as it covers the basics, a copy of the manual can be downloaded here https://www.frsky-rc.com/horus-x12s/ ,the radio also support opentx, and can be reflashed with opentx, and I read somewhere it can run both in a dual boot function, though don't quote me on this, I am still exploring this radio, if anyone is interested in opentx for the HORUS X12S, search on google for "HOURUS OPENTX 2.2 TIPS", has lots of useful info, I know spelling is wrong, dont blame me, its how it is, for those who want to know, the res is 480*272, but given its size, res is very appropriate, image quality is very good, though shrinking your pics may require a little fiddling, that said, I have found the FrOS to be quite easy to figure out, I managed to find a manual, more like an explanation of the radio's functions really, but one quick flip through, and it all pretty much made sense, coming from JR radio's mainly, I still have a lot to learn, but the FrOS will get you flying pretty quickly, other added features are its support of external modules, the radio uses an internal antenna, but also supports an external one software switched, a port on the back allows you to use it with an external antenna (supplied), another great feature is that the radio has an additional gimbal hidden in the left menu control, can be used for a camera gimbal on fpv aircraft or any other choice as all the channels and switches are configurable, the radio also supports radio tilt forward and back and side to side as a 2 channel function, the radio becomes an addition joystick with internal gyro's, bit of a mind spin, it also supports 32 channels with the use of the external bay and an XJT module, channels 1-16 are supported by the internal module, 17-32 external, each can be switched on or off via software, so if your running another brand module, it can be powered up while the FrSky one is off, I believe its possible to use any type of module though, eg 433mhz long range or what ever and assign channels 17-32 to that module. the radio has many features I like, my only quirk so far is that the handle is rectangular, and does not support a tx stand, and the 3rd mini gimbal to my knowledge cant have the spring returns removed, no doubt someone will find a way, FrSky have a great future given the cost of items is budget minded, but with out compromise on quality, I know there are those whom claim otherwise, but like all brands, you get bum gear once in a while, it happens, those using other brands just dont advertise it and move on, bang for buck, a radio that supports 32 channels, has all the whistles and bells, telemetry as standard, quality gimbals gets my tick, and I hope will win the hearts of others, I know the X9D initially got ragged, but its a new OS for the X12S, many will find its all they need, while opentx will remain a choice, the addition of FrOS will bring many into the fold being far more user friendly firmware, no doubt FrSky will expand on their OS with updates as open tx grows, while user input will allow FrSky to bring their OS into line for those of us happy to just get out and fly, hope this helps.....happy flying

 

Definitely impressive looking piece of kit. Large screen, looks to be a quality build as well. 32 channels? WOW... and amazing amount of control there for a radio. Nice review BTW.

 

I have my screen brightness set up on a pot so I can very the brightness.

Music (MP3) set up on a slider for volume.

 

Does it feel heavy in the hand? And how loose/smooth are the gimbals?

 

the 12 is same as a Jeti (only 4g heaver ).
Gimbals are butter smooth and the Horus 10s has even better ones.
